Humpty Dumpty

December 1, 2008

As I glanced through an old Mother Goose book in an antique shop the other day, I reread many of the favorite nursery rhymes I learned as a child. Jack and Jill, Three Blind Mice, Jack Sprat, etc. The rhyming is nice and all – but what are the origins of these stories?  Ring around the Rosie for example, refers to the Bubonic Plague and Jack and Jill is based on the beheadings of King Louis XVI and his Queen Marie Antoinette. Seems pretty grim subject matter for the wee ones!

Here’s Ricky Gervais’ take on Humpty Dumpty.
